WINCHESTER PROTOTYPE PISTOL PARTS FOR THE PROPOSED MODEL 1959-63 DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER. The idea for an inexpensive Cal. 22 or 38 revolver was explored by Winchester with the Bellmore-Johnson Tool Co. of Hamden, CT in the period 1959-63. Bellmore-Johnson designed the prototypes utilizing a sintered metal process for the frame fabrication and produced several test pieces. About the time that Winchester was seriously considering entering production, President Kennedy was assassinated and Winchester immediately scrapped the idea for fear of political repercussions. They closed the plant they had built to do this project, destroyed the existing samples except for the remaining prototype parts and two complete revolvers, which are currently on display in the Cody Firearms Museum, Cody, WY. This lot consists of two barreled actions which are the actual prototype patterns as identified by a numerical tag, three blued prototype frames, cylinder with ejector, and a box of parts, springs and screws, probably everything to assemble another complete gun. Accompanying are five 8×10 factory black & white photos of these partially completed revolvers. These prototype parts were obtained by Mr. Hutchinson directly from the Research Department through his friend John Olin. Accompanied by a copy of volume 1 of “THE WINCHESTER REPEATER” from the fall of 1984 containing an article by Peter Murray on “20TH CENTURY WINCHESTER HANDGUNS” detailing much of the above information with photographs of several partially finished frames and a letter from the former Director of Marketing and Product Planning. An extremely rare offering for the Winchester collector. CONDITION: Generally good with some scattered surface rust. 4-46939 (500-2,500)
