ELABORATE CARVED ORIENTAL HARDWOOD CABINET.

Second half 19th century. The rectangular case with deeply carved arch crest depicting opposing fighting dragons within cloud bands above the rectangular case, densely carved overall. With prunus, conifers, cranes, songbirds, and multiple dragons. The cabinet fitted with an arrangement of doors, drawers, and open shelves centering an arched footbridge. Valance and side panels with foliate pierce carved panels. The door panels, drawer fronts, and medial back panels each fitted with a gold lacquer plaque inlaid with ornately carved chrysanthemums, peonies, iris, and other floral sprigs and sprays, in deep relief and of excellent quality. The whole on a carved base of opposing dragons centering a foo dog mask, all with inlaid abalone eyes. The whole raised on scrolled feet. SIZE: 82″ h x 48″ w x 20″ d. PROVENANCE: The cabinet was originally part of the Christian Heurich, Jr. family collection of Washington, D.C. CONDITION: Generally very good with original surfaces.
