WONDERFUL MID-19TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL RENAISSANCE REVIVAL CARVED IVORY DAGGER.

They don’t get much better than this for form, quality or condition. The 14″ dagger pointed blade has etched decoration and engraved iron capstan. The remainder of knife is all ivory made in multiple pieces and most unusual is that this carving exhibits walrus not often encountered in Dieppe carvings. Blade has iron patina sculpted solid four-sided grip as a branched fluted pommel and a fluted languette with decorative trim. Scabbard tip has a cherub’s head on either side between spiral decorated rosettes. Though they are mentioned in the literature, the scabbard in typical Renaissance form is a panel of relief carved of 11 figures. Starting with a baby, and ending with a full-figured king and all his regalia with two skeletal figures apparently escorting him. There are similar examples of Renaissance Revival carvings of knives made at Dieppe described in the September 27, 1857 Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art. NOTE: Certifiable antique Ivory. SIZE: Overall: 16-1/2″ l. Blade 7-3/4″ l. Knife with handle: 14″.
