*WINCHESTER EXPERIMENTAL MODEL 70 SOLID ACTION SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 308. This rifle is 1 of a consecutive numbered pair in this auction. The receiver was made at the request of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Training Center at Ft. Benning, GA. It was made without top and bottom cutouts, for added strength and accuracy. The Army ordered two of these rifles from Winchester. The factory initially made four receivers in case one or more was damaged. None were damaged in the initial assembly, so two receivers remained. Mr. Max Thompson, the Manager of Rifle and Pistol Promotion at Winchester had the custom shop build these two rifles, one in Cal. 308 and the other in Cal. 225 Winchester. This rifle has a 28″ tapered heavy round bbl, 7/8″ at the muzzle. It is mounted in a heavy target stock with hand stop rail groove in the bottom (rail never installed). It has a deep pistol grip with Winchester black recoil pad. It also has an alloy Model 70 trigger guard and floorplate that covers the plug in the magazine well. The bbl and front receiver ring are mounted with Unertl-style target blocks. The normal Model 70 action cutoff is missing and a screw is inserted through the side of the receiver as a bolt stop. Accompanied by a letter from the former Director of Marketing at Winchester identifying this rifle and verifying its production. SN 905151. CONDITION: Excellent to as new. Retains virtually all its original factory finish to both metal and wood. 4-47435 (2,500-5,000)
