SUPERB QUALITY, EARLY FLINTLOCK SINGLE FOWLER BY IOHANN WAASS OF VIENNA.

NSN. Cal. 20 ga. This lovely early gun, made around 1700, has 43-1/2″ bbl with octagonal breech section tapering and transitioning to round through broad wedding band. Breech section is inset with a number of poincon, one with “Iohann Was”. Large flat bodied lock with shaped chamfer features unbridled friction frizzen and flat bodied serpentine cock. Lock is engraved with scroll, horseman, and running rabbit. Makers name is under pan and “In Wein” is behind cock. Exceptionally fancy walnut half stock, has carved horn tip, fine relief scroll carving around bbl tang, transition of comb, and gilded brass furniture. This very fancy furniture consists of relief carved and nicely scroll engraved heavy buttplate, trigger guard and ramrod pipes with baroque pierced sideplate and matching crest plate at top of grip. CONDITION: Good. Iron and steel parts cleaned to silver and brown over considerable pitting. Wood has considerable marks and scuffs under restored finish. Carving slightly softened. There is a repaired crack about 3″ behind forend tip which has reopened, otherwise stock appears sound with one small chip missing under forward portion of lock.
