*RARE WINCHESTER PROTOTYPE OR EXPERIMENTAL MODEL 70 BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. .27. Standard grade Model 70 featherweight rifle with 22″ tapered round bbl, ramp front sight, folding bbl sight, marked on the left side of the chamber area “27 CAL SPECIAL”, checkered one piece Monte Carlo stock with aluminum buttplate and sling swivels. This rifle is accompanied by a letter, dated 5/11/93, from Mr. Herman N. Bockstruck, the former Alton, IL plant research engineer in charge of ammunition testing and development and was also in charge of Mr. Olin’s personal guns and other special firearms in the factory. This letter states that Winchester manufactured six rifles of this configuration for R & D testing under a military contract in the late 1950’s, titled “HOMOLOGOUS SERIES STUDY” and was known as “1044 Contract”. They built rifles in 22, 25, 27 & 30 calibers, all built on the 7.62mm Nato cartridge. Upon completion of the test, eventually all the test rifles were either destroyed or shipped to the military except this rifle which Olin Corp. was allowed to retain. The suggested name for the cartridge was going to be “277 Winchester” but was never put into production. This rifle was subsequently put into Mr. Olin’s collection and eventually given to Mr. Bockstruck by Mr. Olin and subsequently sold to Mr. Hutchinson. This almost certainly is a one of a kind Model 70. SN 252659 CONDITION: Excellent. Retains about all of the original factory finish to both metal and wood with only very minor edge wear on the metal and one or two small dings on the wood. The bolt is matching numbered to the receiver. 4-46779 JR354 (5,000-10,000)
