*RARE PROTOTYPE WINCHESTER MODEL 21 DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 16ga. Fine , pre-production shotgun with most of the outward appearances of a Model 21 with 28″ bbls choked IMP-MOD/IMP-CYL with concave matted rib, single bead, smooth splinter forearm with unusual latch, marked on the inside of the iron with a “16”, checkered semi-pistol grip stock 14″ over a Winchester hard rubber buttplate. The receiver similar to the standard production Model 21 with a stepped reinforced side, a slight scallop over the front 1/3 of the bottom with a stepped floorplate that is engraved with the Winchester name. It has a plain trigger guard and serrated thumb safety. It is fitted with dbl. triggers and extractors. Accompanied by several letters, one from Herbert G. Houze dated February 5th 1986, the then curator of the Winchester Arms Museum discussed the development of the Model 21 and stating that the initial inception was begun in 1919 with final acceptance of the Model C design as the production model. He states that there were six unnumbered shotguns made, two each in 12ga, 16ga and 20ga. This shotgun is one of the two 16ga. guns. Mr. Houze further states that the hand-engraved Winchester on the bottom of the frame is the only markings for these trial sample shotguns. Another letter, dated January 18th, 1918, to Mr. J. E. Otterson from Edwin Pugsley suggests that Winchester contemplate producing both single barrel and double barrel shotguns. Another letter, dated December 7th, 1929, from Mr. Pugsley to Capt. E.C. Crossman, advising him that the release of the new Winchester dbl. bbl shotgun was imminent and one would be sent to him as soon as they were produced. Also accompanying this lot is a letter from Mr. Hutchinson. NSN. CONDITION: Excellent. Retains most of its original factory finish with one small chemical stain on the left bbl, light edge wear and a small grain check in the heel. Action is a little stiff and sometimes difficult to open. Bright shiny bores. This is a rare opportunity for the fortunate collector to own a one-of-a-kind prototype for the most famous shotgun ever made by Winchester. It seems to be the only remaining example of the three types experimented with and the one Winchester chose to build. Do not allow this opportunity to pass you by. It will not come again in our lifetime!!!4-46907 (25,000-75,000)
