UNKNOWN LARGE BEEHIVE BANK WITH COMBINATION DOOR.Unusually large for a still bank measuring approximately 10″ square x 8″ tall, this particular bank can virtually hold a lifetime of savings for a small child. Of unknown manufacture and most likely from the latter part of the 19th century. The castings are quite unique with rope twisting surrounding the edges of the base and a huge beehive dome on top. Most unique in construction and only three castings are involved. The base and beehive are one casting, the combination door (approximately 5″ l x 1-1/2″ h) is another casting and the sub-base and lower front casting comprise the third. As far as production, this must have been quite a feat because upon close examination, it had to be a difficult and arduous task to produce. The coin slot itself is unusually large (1-1/2″) and should accommodate a silver dollar. One begins to wonder if this was a still bank for a child or perhaps served another purpose. Enameled in black with gold highlights, the bank features a double combination lock and a sliding lever to open the front door. Unique and rare only begin to describe this unusual saving device. SIZE: 10″ l x 10″ d x 8″ h. CONDITION: Overall good to very good original finish with uniform wear to painted surfaces. 1-13754 (3,400-3,600) – Lot 3307 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
