SN 01923. (ca 1931) Cal. 20 ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 28″ Chopper lump bbls are engraved “Westley Richards & Co London” on slightly swamped, narrow, game rib. Bbl flats are engraved “Whitworth Steel” and “MADE IN ENGLAND”. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN, sheaf-of-wheat trademarks, and Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers. Case hardened, round bodied, ogee backed action with detachable locks has water table stamped with patent numbers, with use no. 3844. Locks are housed under hinged floorplate and are fully engine turned, are not stamped with patent use number, but are inlaid “L” and “R” in gold. Action is engraved with 80% coverage well cut large scroll. “Westley Richards & Co” is on each side. Top, behind dolls head rib extension mortise is engraved “Westley Richards Patent One Trigger”. Automatic safety has SAFE inlaid in gold. Single trigger with selector on right side is in small bow scroll engraved trigger guard with SN on tang. Nicely fiddle figured and well streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13-7/8″ over point pattern checkered horn buttplate. Fancy pattern closely spaced checkering with line borders is at grip. Toe line is stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND” and has vacant silver oval. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.619, right – .620. Bore restrictions: left – .029 (full), right – .040 (extra full). Wall thickness: left – .032, right – .030. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Cast: approx 1/4″ on. Weight: 6 lbs. o oz. LOP: 13-7/8″. Tan leather case with leather corners is lined in green felt with gold embossed black leather Westley Richards label in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment, square oil bottle, snap caps, and black leather hand protector. PROVENANCE: Factory letter confirming specifications. History of Westley Richards and Company. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain approx 90% of a fine quality rust blue, possibly orig, with a few subsequent light marks and scratches. Engraving remains clear. Action retains 70 – 80% orig case hardening color strong where protected. Floorplate retains about half of its orig blue. Trigger guard is silvered on edges of bow, and considerably so at grip. Stocks retain nearly all of a well done hand rubbed oil finish with a few subsequent marks, checkering slightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Bbls are on face.
