IVES CLOCKWORK ROWBOAT.Other than the clothing on this toy from the latter part of the 1800s this toy retains exceptional original paint. The green decking stenciled with gold lettering has a patent date of February 9th, 1869 and oftentimes various names were stenciled onto the boat as well. This particular example is lettered “Carrie”. When the mechanism is wound the child would place this boat in a pond and the gentleman oarsman would row furiously about in the water. Typical of Ives, they utilized figures with wooden bodies and an applied and painted brass mask face. Overall a fine example of a most impressive toy that is well over 100+ years old. The toy retains its original wooden oars which are oftentimes lacking and/or replaced. A really neat toy that is visually attractive as well as mechanically interesting. Seldom does one find a fine example such as this gently used piece. SIZE: 11″ long. CONDITION: As stated above, clothing is original but in poor condition and as is also typical the tin motor covering is an older replacement. 1-13893 (2,000-4,000) – Lot 3256 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
