ALTHOF BERGMAN HORSE ON A CLOCKWORK WHEELED BASE.A large Early American tin running horse affixed to a clockwork base similar in nature to the patriotic bell toy (see Julia’s Malcolm Deisenroth Sale; 6/30/2010; Lot 3042) or to the more often seen Althof Bergman Boy on Tricycle. The toy features a brown horse attached by an A-frame armature connecting to the covered clockwork mechanism. A separate wire attached to an eccentric gear on the mechanism and the horse enables the horse to roll along on the floor in a galloping type manner. As was normal for this time period toy companies utilized all aspects of the various pieces and parts they had on hand. The front wheeled fork of this toy was used on the Goodwin Walker toy and as discussed above the clockwork mechanism was used on several different toys. Due to a lack of manufacturer catalogs/jobber sheets displaying the variety of different toys available will let collectors today often find unlisted toys that are found in attics or tucked away in old time collections such as in this case. SIZE: 10″ l x 8-1/4″ h. CONDITION: Overall very good original condition with some in-painting to red clockwork mechanism covering and re-soldering/paint touch-up to horse at the “A”-frame/saddle area. 1-14200 (3,000-4,000) – Lot 3254 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
