GEORGE BROWN CLOCKWORK “ECLIPES” LOCOMOTIVE.

A very early style locomotive with the typical wood burning smokestack typical of the 1850s-60s era. One must question if this was interpretation by a toy maker who chose to place the steam chests at the rear of the locomotive and not employ rear wheels or so if some form of this locomotive existed in the real world. Unusual in the fact that it employs a fair amount of wood in addition to heavily stenciled tin. Regardless, this unique form has a great deal of subtle charm and is quite appealing. Clockwork mechanism contained within the boiler and steering of locomotive is accomplished by a small wheel on the underside. Sticker on the underside indicates this toy was originally in the Barenholtz collection. SIZE: 9-1/2″ l. CONDITION: Toy appears to be in all original condition. Brass bell is perhaps an early replacement. Overall very fine on wood parts and good on painted and stenciled tin. 1-14205 (1,400-1,800) – Lot 3249
