NATIVE AMERICAN FOLK ART BIRCH BARK PAINTING OF AN AMERICAN INDIAN CHIEF.

This unusual unsigned oil on bark portrait roundel is housed in a large, round, elaborately woven birch bark frame. The portrait depicts a proud chief in profile wearing a headdress of white feathers and a hide shirt adorned with several strings of beads. SIZE: Panel diameter: 16″. Overall: 32″ CONDITION: The bark painting is nailed to a round mahogany panel, which is slightly warped. The bark is lifting and puckering in places with a minor 1″ split. There is a 3″ area of restoration in the white feather of his headdress. There are losses to the intricate birch bark weaving of the frame. 50311-2 (1,000-2,000) – Lot 3212
