PRUSSIAN 4TH GRENADIER REGIMENT (KING FREDERICK THE GREAT REGIMENT) OFFICER’S HELMET MODEL 1897-1913.

Black lacquered leather helmet with gilt brass trim. Leather helmet has good form and firm stitching. Interior has sweat leather and unusual blue cloth head liner. Sweat leather has the non-serrated interior. No extra holes in helmet body. Frontplate is the Prussian old style Grenadier eagle with the monogram “FWR” on the eagle’s breast. Above the eagle’s head is the banner “1626” with is attached through the front hole of spike base. Tall officer’s spike with star retainers. Flat chinscales with Prussian and Reichs cockades. Inside helmet bell is the wearer’s handwritten name in pencil. All metal trim has a dull brown finish due to age. Helmet appears never to have been cleaned or polished. This frontplate was used until 1913 when it was replaced by the wide-winged guard eagle without star. PROVENANCE: The Doug Buhler Collection of Rare and Spectacular German Imperial Headgear and Pickelhauben. CONDITION: Very good overall. General oxidation of metal trim noted by dull finish. Unusual interior liner is typical of the early war period. Otherwise untouched helmet. 51586-30 RT (3,000-4,000) – Lot 3193
