FINE DANISH CLASSICAL REVIVAL BENCHMADE MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE ABATTANT.

Circa 1922, Marstal, Denmark. Of classical form, the rectangular case with demilune display platform joined to the rectangular top above the molded crest joined to the conforming case fitted with a long drawer with cyma curved front above a vertical hinged lid with bookend figural mahogany veneered panels flanked by freestanding carved mahogany Corinthian columns. The desk interior comprised of an elevated cabinet fitted with an arrangement of nine drawers centering a prospect door with concave front flanked by engaged colonnettes. Case additionally fitted with three long drawers faced with bookend mahogany veneer beneath the writing surface all raised on a simple rectangular plinth with bracket feet. NOTE: A pencil inscription on the interior of the top drawer in Danish written by Christian Vogensen: “Made in Marstal and received in Odense the 22nd April 1922”. SIZE: 64″ h overall x 41″ w x 20″ d overall. PROVENANCE: The writing desk was commissioned by Christian Vogensen, a prominent pharmacist in the towns of Marstal, Odense, Svendborg and in Skjern, Denmark. The desk was commissioned by Mr. Vogensen while in Marstal in 1922 and was built by the cabinet making family of his wife Ellen Vogensen. The desk was kept by Mr. Vogensen until his death in 1947 when it was passed down within the family and now to the current family member and consignor. NOTE: A second desk with same ownership and provenance is offered in this auction as the following lot. CONDITION: Very good overall, retaining original polished surfaces with very slight and minimal crazing within the varnish. One mother-of-pearl oval escutcheon in need of re-gluing and reassembly.
