MOST RARE AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE EARLY STEIFF MOHAIR “MUZZLE” STYLE BEAR WITH LEATHER ACCESSORIES AND BUTTON.

From circa 1908, this is a charming and early “muzzle” style bear, designed after bears in circuses that would travel from town to town across Europe last century. Bear is made from blonde mohair and is five-ways jointed. With black shoe button eyes and black hand-embroidered facial features and claws. Four claws on each hand. Very prominent back hump, long arms with spoon shaped paws, and long, narrow feet. Working growler. With original brown leather muzzle. Ted retains his trailing “F” button as his Steiff ID. This rare and marvelous design was produced in light brown, white, or dark brown mohair in 22, 25, 30, 32, 35, 40, 46, 50, 60, and 70cm overall from 1908 through 1917. SIZE: Standing: 16-1/2″ (42cm). Sitting: 12″ (30cm). PROVENANCE: SL GmbH 2008, Lot 24. CONDITION: Felt on both hand paws possibly replaced. One foot pad with restorations, the other with minor dings. Light general thinning.
