IMPORTANT ROCOCO REVIVAL BOULLE MARQUETRY SHELF CLOCK.

Late 19th century, France/Germany. In the 18th century French style, the case surmounted by a cast bronze figure of a younger partially robed Father Time holding a sickle in his right hand and a sundial(?) in his left hand. Seated on a globe, he is centered by four classical form cast-brass urns, all above the bolection molded frieze over a cast floral draped architectural gallery with seated puttis at the corners. The case with shield shaped glass door within a foliate and guilloche frame cast with floral and berry leafy branches and rayed device in the apron. The case with incurved glass panel sides with similar brass borders. The interior of the hinged backboard with dense boulle marquetry depicting a fanciful foliate and floral landscape with birds, gryphons and dancing figure. The case raised on scrolling foliate supports cast with female mythical winged figures set on a molded marquetry boulle plinth with concave molded sides centering a brass parquetry floor. The shaped apron with canted corners, raised on cast square legs with bombé sides, additionally cast with acanthus leaves and tapering to a narrow foot. The central shaped apron with scrolling foliate boulle marquetry vinery within leafy brass borders with scrolled volutes. The dial cast with a royal profiled bust within a trophy filled urn above a crown within the Roman numeral chapter ring comprised of white enamel cartouches, each with Roman numeral. Dial with blued steel foliate pierce carved hands over time and strike apertures. The dial with floral pierced cast Ormolu apron, mounted with enamel plaque, inscribed with the name “Adolf Oppermann/KGL HOFUHRMACHER/Berlin“. The French brass eight day movement striking on coil gong at the hour and half-hour. Spring mechanism incorporates rack-and-snail system. Movement now in good clean working order. The movement incised on the backplate “MADE IN FRANCE”. Additionally stamped with award “MEDALLE ARGENT VINCENTI 1865”. **Note: Vincenti & Company was awarded a silver medal by king Louis Philippe in 1865. The front and back plates of movement with impressed serial number “1155 7-10 6”. This matching serial number is also found incised on the back of the clock dial. Movement is fitted with original cast-brass pendulum in the form of Louis XIV “The Sun King”. NOTE: A similar clock was once the property of the Vanderbilt family and is listed in the inventory of the Vanderbilt estate in Asheville, North Carolina, where it was at one time on display in the main salon. The inventory record entry, as reported to the current owner, states: “Large French 18th century table clock. Gilded brass frame and finial of figure of soldier carrying spear. Glass enclosed works and pendulum. Framed heavily decorated with Ormolu. Bronze face with blue Roman numeral on white porcelain. 42″ x 15″ x 9″.” SIZE: 43-3/4″ overall h x 22-3/4″ w x 10″ d. CONDITION: All cast fittings and decorations are intact and without structural damage or restoration. The boulle case with no losses to brass marquetry. Parquet floor on clock base with loss to one tortoise shell segment. Some lifting of brass parquet inlays demonstrating lifting from possible warping in the oak case foundation. One brass plate absent above proper right rear foot in the apron. Dial in very fine condition. Pendulum original as noted. Brass movement clean and operational.
