TWO BAROQUE REVIVAL SAVONAROLA INLAID CHAIRS.

Third quarter 19th century, Italy or Spain. Each chair with arched, scalloped and shaped removable back, slotted into the bank of each square arm terminating in spherical handgrips. Joined to eight serpentine interlocking supports rotating within the central plank seat terminating in elongated shoe feet. Each with intricate celluloid inlays simulating ivory. The first chair inlaid with the “D’AUTREMONT OF LORRAINE” family crest. Centered by delicate scrolling vinery, the arms inlaid with bellflowers, the seat inlaid with a fleur-de-lis within circles. The arm and leg supports inlaid with diamond devices. The second chair structurally identical to the first. The back inlaid with a silhouette bust portrait of a male figure with hood and robe with inlaid circles flanked by cherubs with bows and arrows amidst a delicate scrolling floral vinery. The arms inlaid with floral filled urns in the classic taste. The seat with conforming inlay. SIZE: 38-1/2″ h of back x 28-1/2″ w x 21″ d. PROVENANCE: The family of Hubert D’Autremont, who in 1793, was arrested, condemned, and put to death by the guillotine. His widow and children emigrated to America. Alexandre-Hubert D’Autremont, son of Hubert D’Autremont, married Abigail Dodge, daughter of Major Dodge. Louis D’Autremont, son of Alexandre-Hubert D’Aturemont born 20 January 1805,. Louis fathered Charles D’Autremont, born 20 March 1845. Charles emigrated to New York, where he established a family estate in Angelica, New York. At this time, and prior to the taking of the estate by the state of New York by eminent domain in the 1930’s the desk and Savonarola chairs arrived from France and remained there until the property was demolished. It was during this period that the family descendants of the consignor acquired them along with other family heirlooms, including a pair of D’Autremont ancestral portraits sold by this company in the late 20th century. CONDITION: Both chairs with significant inlay losses. Dry crusty surface, dark patina and color, and surface soiling. Both chairs remain functional and operational. 52212-1 (800-1,000) – Lot 3087
