MONUMENTAL ROCOCO E. HOWARD & CO. CARVED WALNUT CLOCK.

Second quarter 19th century, Boston, Massachusetts. The keystone stepped molded crest flanked by scrolled leaftips continuing to carved pendant bellflower elements beneath scrolled volutes centering the circular molded hinged door opening to 12-3/4″ enameled iron dial with Roman numeral chapter ring and sub seconds dial, both with steel blued original hands. The hour and minute hands in cutout diamond form. The seconds dial with diamond arrowhead. Marked in Gothic lettering “E. Howard & Co. BOSTON”. The eight day time only brass movement with maintaining power mechanism. Clearly marked on the front plate “E. Howard & Co. BOSTON”. The case fitted with a tombstone door with black and gold Howard style eglomise brass panel through which is viewed the pendulum with gilt wood rod and large Damescene pendulum bob in front of the weight board. The whole on a stepped molded plinth beneath scrolled leaftips. SIZE: 64-1/2″ h x 28″ w x 8″ d. PROVENANCE: From the estate of Albert W. Lamprell. Originating from the estate of Daniel Coit Gilman (1831-1908), first president of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. CONDITION: Case with original surface with medium brown color and mellow patina. The dial with original paint surface with craquelure. Paint loss due to dial corrosion, notably between numerals XII and I, and V and VII. Normal and expected abrasion around all apertures. No evidence of repaint. Brass movement measures 6-1/4″ h x 4″ w x 2″ d. Original with no alterations or restoration. Pendulum rod and bob original. Eglomise panel original but probably re-set. Original lead weight and crest with numeral I (probably the same as a weight for a Howard #1 regulator). 52233-7 (3,000-5,000) – Lot 3078
