GOOD ARTS AND CRAFTS SIGNED OAK SMOKING STAND.

1st quarter 20th century, Australia. With engraved monogram “THB” carved into the interior of hinged lid and highlighted in red, possibly the mark of Thomas Howard Brown. The rectangular quarter sawn top with a circular copper lined compartment with conforming chip carved and molded round cover flanked by a pair of rectangular hinged book form lids with hammered strap hinges. One opening to a copper lined humidor, the other opening to an interior fitted with pipe racks. The first carved with the phrase “OH VANITY OF WORLDLY STUFF”. The second engraved with the words “GONE WITH A SINGLE HUFF”. The top itself well carved with a profiled figure of a man with peaked cap smoking a long stemmed pipe in profile. Additionally carved and centered within the top with a pipe emitting elaborate swirls of smoke carved in the art nouveau taste. Table raised on rectangular shaped incurved legs and trimmed with hammered copper strapping. SIZE: 30″ h (overall) x 28″ l x 17-3/4″ w. CONDITION: Table retains old surface now age darkened with good patina. Structurally good, with appropriate in-use wear. 52212-3 (800-1,200) – Lot 3060
