EXTREMELY IMPORTANT & MONUMENTAL LE FUNI URN BY GIO PONTI, 1927.

The large tapered vase having two ribbed side handles and fold over mouth rim. Cream background with horizontal decoration of ropes and knots. The bottom rim edge signed “Gio Ponti 1927”. The bottom signed “Ginori, 985 Made in Italy” and remnants of a paper label “985/214”. Gio Ponti created this decoration specifically for this vase form in the summer of 1926 and in a letter dated Aug 13, 1926 he noted … “having approved on the 4th of this month the decoration of the large vase with ropes, please arrange its execution for I could see it accomplished at the end of this month. We need to have two of these vases ready for a symmetric display at the exhibition” (referring to the III Monza Triennal, 1927 in which a pair of these vases were exhibited). It is stated that there are two other examples of this design known, one original in the Lauro Collection which is now in a private collection in Verona, and the second is in a private collection in Genoa.
