CLOCKWORK DANCING FIGURE OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN AMERICAN.Late 19th century, American. The carved and painted articulated and jointed figure joined to a small steel rod which passes through the backboard affixed to chromo-lithograph paper illustrating a river scene with flat bottom pole barge alongside the riverbank filled with watermelons and barrels of fruit, all a backdrop for the dancing figure. Driven by a clockwork mechanism. SIZE: 8-3/4″ h x 6 -2/3″ w. CONDITION: The figure of the dancer is complete. Original clothing with deterioration, discoloration and staining. The lithograph with losses to decorative border and with some abrasion in top segment resulting in a small tear behind head of dancer. Also age darkened. Board structurally intact. Spring driven clockwork mechanism. Gears in mechanism appear operational, braking mechanism appears to interfere with uninterrupted operation of dancer.
