FOUR CAST-IRON MECHANICAL BANKS INCLUDING MASON BANK, BOY ON TRAPEZE, MAGIC BANK, PADDY & THE PIG.

1) Shepard Hardware Co., Patented 1887, cast-iron and hand-painted, the Hod carrier receives the coin and throws it forward, depositing it into the bank as the mason raises and lowers trowel and brick, while the Hod moves forward and backwards. 2) Late 19th century. Manufactured by Barton and Smith, Philadelphia. Place a coin in boy’s head, he tumbles forward depositing the coin in the slot on the base, and completing his turn. 3) Light green color, J & E Stevens Co., Cromwell, Connecticut”. After the door is opened, which brings the cashier to the front, a slight touch on a knob at the side causes him to disappear and place the money of the depositor safely in the vault. The bank engraved beneath, “PAT’D AUG 5 1873. MAR 7 1876”. 4) J & E Stevens Co., “Patent August 8 1882” impressed in bottom of bank. “Paddy & the Pig.” Originally sold as the “Shamrock” bank. This model with brown coat and glass eyes. “Place the coin on the nose of the pig. Press the lever and the pig will strike the coin with its foot, when the man will open his mouth, catch it on his tongue, and swallow it; at the same time the eyes will roll, giving the face a pleased expression.” SIZE: 1) 7″ h. 2) 9-1/2″ h. 3) 5-1/4″ h x 5″ l. 4) 8-1/2″ h x approx. 7-1/2″ l PROVENANCE: The Estate of Morris Racker. CONDITION: 1) With original surface, areas of paint loss throughout. Bank is functional. 2) Original painted surfaces untouched with spot paint loss throughout. Manually operational. Figure tends to come to rest horizontally or in an inverted position.3) Bank is operational. We believe the green color was originally yellow. Other areas of repaint include frame of door. 4) Bank is partly operational. Pig will kick coin. Mouth of figure and tongue functioning. Paddy’s eyes do not appear to roll. May need cleaning and adjustments. Painted surfaces all appear original. All banks generally good. 51956-24 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 3004
