FOUR MECHANICAL CAST-IRON BANKS.1) Miniature combo bank cast with angel on top panel, still bank with three tin sides. 2) Bulldog bank Red blanket, J & E Stevens Co., designed by James H. Bowen, patented 4/27/1880. Place the coin on the nose of the dog, and as the tail is pulled, he will throw the coin off, catch it in his mouth, and swallow it. 3) Eagle with eaglets bank, J. & E. Stevens Company Cromwell, Ct. – Circa 1890 As part of their marketing campaign, Stevens played up the patriotic connection of the bald eagle and distributed this bank under the name “American Eagle Bank”. The bank is operated by placing a coin in the eagle’s beak and pressing a lever at the rear. The eaglets rise from the nest as the eagle bends forward to feed them, the coin falls into the nest and disappears into the receptacle below. 4) Pig in chair bank, J & E Stevens Co., designed by Peter Adams, Patented 1897. Place a coin on the tray and press the lever. The pig catches it in his mouth, moves his tongue & then swallows it. SIZE: 1) 3-3/4″ h. 2) 7-1/2″ h. 3) 6″ h. Length of base: 6-11/16″. 4) 5-5/8″ h. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Morris Racker. CONDITION: All banks are functional. The eagle bank with possible heightening of black markings on back and wings.
