EXTREMELY RARE & POSSIBLY UNIQUE COLT MODEL 1855 SPORTING CARBINE. SN 559. Cal. .40, 18″ part oct. bbl. This transition carbine has features of both the 1st Model and 2nd Model, Model 1855 carbine. Only forty of the Model 1855 carbines were made with an 18″ bbl and only ten were built in .40 cal. making this one of the rarest Colts ever made. 1st Model features include a smooth round cylinder and the oiler on the left side of the frame. The wood full-length forearm has heretofore only been found on 2nd Models. The bbl is marked with “COLT’S PT. / 1856” in one set of brackets and “ADDRESS COL. COLT / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” inside a second set of brackets. A folding rear sight is milled into the top of the frame. The 2-pc cleaning rod is half under the bbl and half under a trap in the buttplate. There are sling swivels mounted at the rear of the trigger guard strap and on the bbl band at the front of the stock. The cylinder scene consists of the SN between two etched lines with “COLT’S PATENT” above and “SPORTING RIFLE” below as well as a forest scene of two deer running from a man pointing a gun. A letter from R. L. Wilson points out all of the features of this gun and assesses their rarity. CONDITION: Blue-brown patina on the bbl, 20% blue on the frame, mostly smooth gray patina. The cylinder scene is worn in one area and the rear of the cylinder is badly battered from dry firing. The deluxe walnut stock is fine with light scratches and some loss due to oil. The right side of the frame in front of the cylinder is battered, the oiler is functional. Action is fine. 4-46920 FS259 (25,000-50,000)
