BOSTON JOURNAL PICTORAL ATLAS (1900); 1864 COAST SURVEY AND TREATISE OF THE LAW RELATIVE TO MERCHANT SHIPS AND SEAMEN.

The report of the superintendent of the coast survey has professor Bache’s compliments on the front paste down. Small folio which is sound but has split to hinges and numerous gouges to the boards. There are thirty-nine folding charts. Chart 5 (St. George’s River, Maine) was withdrawn and awaited the next report. The first twenty-seven charts focus on the east coast. There are two Mississippi charts and a chart of the Ohio River. The three sheets of the western coast are new editions. The charts examined all appear very good to fine. 2) The Atlas volume is in color with numerous additional charts. It is barely holding together but the boards are present with much fraying along the edges. Tall folio. The treatise is authored by Charles Abbott. Published Boston by Hillard & Gray, 1829. Fourth American from the fifth London and is in 625 pp including the index. The additional text is by one of the century’s great American jurists, Joseph Storry. PROVENANCE: Maralyn Young estate, Arundel/Falmouth Maine, being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Although the maps in the atlas are generally very good, the exterior appearance of the atlas is less than desirable. The coast survey passes condition muster and is actually far better than most and appears to have had little use given the absence of water stains and the like. The Maritime Treatise is sound but appears to have spent time aboard ship in light of the water stains. Abrasions to the full leather binding and part of the red spine label missing. There are ciphers on the end matter. 51412-101 (250-350) – Lot 2581
