AMERICAN SCHOOL (19th Century) PORTRAIT OF MAJOR EDWARD STANLEY MARSH.

Distinguished bust length portrait of confederate veteran Major Edward Stanley Marsh wearing a double breasted grey uniform with gold collar adorned with five-point stars. Born in 1838, Marsh served during the Civil War in the “Pamlico Rifles”, the 4th Regiment of the North Carolina Troops. Marsh was wounded in the lung at Chancellorsville and subsequently retired. He died in 1906. The unsigned oil on canvas is dated lower right “1884” and is housed in the original period carved giltwood frame with acanthus leaf decoration. The lot is accompanied by a collection of photocopied documents and letters pertaining to the sitter and his military service. SIZE: 24″ x 18-1/4″. Overall: 31″ x 25-1/2″.
