GROUP OF FOUR ORIENTAL RUGS INCLUDING THREE SHIRVAN EXAMPLES.

Early 10th century. 1) Shirvan Qatan rug with rows of dense polychrome flower heads on a rose pink ground within an ivory main border of geometric trelliswork within a blue/green floral guard border and a conforming terracotta floral guard border. 2) Shirvan corridor rug with five aligned blue/black hexagonal medallions with interwoven latch hook borders on a camel ground within a terracotta main border of stepped geometric devices within a wine glass camel guard border and a pale pink guard border with interlocking medium indigo sawtooth devices, the ends with braided fringe. 3) Shirvan rug with rows of polychrome leshgi stars and snowflake devices on a midnight blue ground within a polychrome tarantula and crab ivory main border within brick red guard borders. 4) An unusual corridor rug, possibly from a Lavar Kirman carpet, of asymmetrical design with a row of four mandalas alternating with three rectangular rose red floral medallions all on a deep indigo ground with polychrome floral vinery beneath which is a long ivory panel of polychrome flower heads within crimson cloud bands above a row of blue/gray and wine red floral half medallions within a dark blue/gray ground, the whole within a burnt gold main border of pale turquoise trelliswork. SIZE: 1) 3′ 7″ x 8′ 8″. 2) 3′ 5″ x 7′ 6″. 3) 4′ x 5′ 8″. 4) 2′ 10″ x 12′ 10″. PROVENANCE: Maralyn Young estate, Arundel/Falmouth Maine, being sold unreserved. CONDITION: 1) With a strong if somewhat irregular palette, even wear overall, losses to fringe at ends continuing into outer guard border, general light soiling. 2) With overall wear and with normal and expected deterioration of iron dyed thread resulting in loss down to foundation of those areas; otherwise fair to good overall. 3) With wear overall, and with some spot losses down to foundation, one end of carpet with severe stain in corner including outer guard border and main border, the last seven inches of carpet with nearly total loss of dyes. Loss of fringe at both ends. Weakness to selvedge throughout. End of carpet with stained area also exhibiting deterioration. 4) With overall even wear and with evidence of having been longitudinally cut along the base of the ivory panel and the row of half medallions. 51412-69, 51412-71, (1,000-1,500) – Lot 2497
