LOUIS XV STYLE TRANSITIONAL BONHEUR DU JOUR PARQUETRY LADY’S DESK.

Last quarter 19th century, France. A fine rosewood example in two parts. The upper case of two banks of four half serpentine drawers centering a door inset with porcelain plaque depicting a seated Putti inspecting a classical bust, all surmounted by two shaped tops centering a raised central platform with removable top revealing a well designed for potted plant, all with reticulated gilt bronze gallery. The top fitted to a writing table with pull out baise-lined writing slide above a double serpentine long drawer fitted with porcelain plaque of Putti playing instruments, raised on slender cabriole legs terminating in scrolled gilt metal feet, the whole with scrolling gilt bronze mounts and borders throughout. Parquetry panels overall within rosewood crossbanded borders. A well proportioned and pleasing example. SIZE: 50″ h x 37″ w x 22-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Downeast Maine home, descendant of Knud Rasmussen, famous Danish arctic explorer whose “greatest achievement” was the massive Fifth Thule Expedition (1921–1924) being sold unreserved.
