*CUSTOM MAUSER OBERNDORF ‘WHELAN’ MARKED BOLT ACTION RIFLE.SN 1. Cal. .400 ‘Whelan'(?). 24-3/4″ part octagon bbl. “OBERNDORF” and “COL. T. ‘WHELAN'” on right side of bbl; Mauser banner logo and “400 ‘WHELAN'” on left side of bbl. Bbl also radially marked “KRUPP STAHL GEMANY” at receiver ring joint. Left side of bbl at chamber has a Crown proof mark followed by “St M. G.”. Military M98 action is unmarked except for a solitary SN “1” on left side just above the stock. Bolt extractor retains SN “15”. Bolt root SN not present. Bbl is fitted with three leaf express rear sight dovetailed into a full length matted rib. Front sight retains SN “89” visible when viewed from the top. An elevating, lockable bolt is peep sight is attached with a dovetail to the rear of the bolt. Bolt handle is slightly swept back. European walnut stock is checkered and embellished oak leaf and acorn motifs and fitted with sling swivel posts and ebony tip. Pistol grip has a plain steel cap. Steel buttplate displays the Mauser banner logo. CONDITION: Overall finish and appearance is fine. With lustrous deep blue finish just starting to turn brown on the bolt release catch with some very tiny flecks of pitting on the receiver band. There is a slightly plum color where the bolt handle meets the bolt body and the safety is starting to exhibit a brown patina, as is the pistol cap. Stock shows some very light handling marks with a little bit of scuffing to the forend tip and a small 1/4″ chip out of the wood just to the rear of the forward sling stud. Mechanics crisp.
