WARREN MCARTHUR LABELED ARMCHAIR.Circa 1930-1933. Los Angeles, California. Warren McArthur (American, 1885-1961). The armchair with three brushed and polished slats, the tubular stiles continuing to flattened armrests on conforming supports continuing to frontal legs centering the square seat cushion frame, the whole raised on tubular legs with box stretchers, all with decorative polished molded discs. The armchair with original paper label beneath proper left arm: “WARREN McARTHUR FURNITURE/LOS ANGELES, CALIF./PATENTS PENDING”. Literature: Sarah Nicholes, ed., Aluminum by Design, exh. cat., Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, 2000, p.216-217 for similar examples. NOTE: The “patent pending” on the label suggest that this chair is pre-1936. McArthur submitted a number of patents for furniture, mostly in the period between 1930 and 1932 which were not issued until 1936. This leads us to believe the chair offered here today was made after the submission of the patent application and before the patent was actually issued. This chair has an overall resemblance to the one illustrated in McArthur’s 1930 patent #19909, wherein the arm supports are now contiguous to the front legs. By the time the McArthur catalog of 1936 was published, his designs and styles were no longer recta-linear but showed more curves in the design. Reference: John Gordon, Curator of Decorative Arts, Yale University. SIZE: 32-1/12″ h at back x 15″ h of seat x 24-1/2″ w overall. PROVENANCE: This chair and the rest of the suite were most likely commissioned for the 1932 wedding of Marion Nichols and William Payson Viles. The Viles lived in New York City until returning to the family home in Augusta, Maine in 1950. Mrs. Viles dies in 1954 and this chair was found in the barn after the last surviving family member passed away in 2012. CONDITION: Chair is structurally intact. The original seat cushion is present and in need of recovering. The wood arms retain original green enamel paint, now weathered and dry with substantial paint loss. Label is intact and legible. Chair is in overall good condition. 51472-4 (2,000-4,000) – Lot 2396
