UNUSUAL & DECORATIVE OCEANA SLIT DRUM WITH RAMS FORM.

Most likely of Sumatran origin, brought back to western Massachusetts after WWII by its collector. The tree trunk was hollowed out leaving a slit on the upper side and by careful control of the thickness of the carving at least two sounds can be attained by drumming. They were used to call the faithful to prayer and because of the low sound which travels a distance, they could “talk” to other villages. Made from the trunk of a palm tree and carved to resemble a ram and covered with a white wash. A very unusual & decorative form. Comes with a custom wood stand for display. SIZE: 27″ total h x 56″ l x 19″ w. CONDITION: Good. 51344-2 (1,000-2,000) – Lot 2350
