UNUSUAL CHIPPENDALE TRANSITIONAL CHERRY SLANT LID DESK.Last quarter 18th century, possibly Rhode Island. The finely dovetailed rectangular case with sloping hinged lid carved with uniquely rendered shell over four graduated thumb-molded long drawers, the uppermost flanked by lopers. The interior with shell carved prospect door opening to a bank of two blocked short drawers flanked by an arrangement of valanced pigeon holes above stationery drawers flanked by banks of three blocked and shell-carved drawers. The whole on a molded base raised on pronounced ogee bracket feet with shaped returns. The desk is fitted with nice unsigned stamped oval brasses, with patriotic American eagle. An “E PLURIBUS UNUM” banner in its beak, and an arrow cluster in one talon, an olive branch in its other talon. Brasses are of the period but not original to this desk. SIZE: 41-1/2″ h x 44″ w x 22-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Maralyn Young estate, Arundel/Falmouth Maine, being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Exterior surface cleaned and repolished. Old repair to lock receiver above lid, repairs at lid hinges. Stabilized shrinkage cracks in lid. One escutcheon absent. Loss to thumbmolding proper left top corner upper drawer. Chip loss to edge of return proper left front foot. Backboards and feet original. Generally good. 51412-43 (1,000-2,000) – Lot 2328
