CHIPPENDALE TIGER MAPLE SECRETARY BOOKCASE.

Second half 18th century, New England. In two parts, the upper case with molded swans-neck pediment terminating in nicely carved floral rosettes alternating with flame finials above a pair of nicely figured astragal arch doors, opening to an interior fitted with rows of valanced pigeon holes, centering document compartments above a row of 6 aligned short drawers. Set on a well proportioned dovetailed lower case, fitted with a hinged sloping lid, the interior fitted with valanced pigeon holes over aligned drawers centering a prospect door fitted with 2 letter slots above a blocked drawer. The lid resting on lopers centering 4 graduated well figured long drawers with thumb-molded edges, raised on a molded bracket base. The feet with shaped returns. SIZE: 90″ h x 37″ w case x 20-1/2″ d. CONDITION: The upper and lower case well matched with good mellow honey brown patina. Bracket base with replaced glue blocks. Cosmetic restoration to small drawers in upper case.
