BRITISH STUDIO POTTERY FIGURE OF A FLOWER VENDOR BY CHARLES VYSE.

Figure of a standing woman in colorful attire holding a child and a basket of flowers, on a wooden plinth, incised signature on side of base C. Vyse Chelsea. Charles Vyse was born in Staffordshire in 1882, and was a key figure in the development of British studio pottery. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to the Doulton factory as a designer. Attended Hanley Art School where he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he studied sculpture from 1905 to 1910. In 1911 he was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. He set up his studio at Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, in 1919 and produced figures based on characters seen on the streets of London. SIZE: 10″ h. PROVENANCE: From a Southern Maine home.
