*NEWTON ARMS COMPANY BOLT RIFLE.

SN 3011. Cal. 256 Newton. 21″ Tapered round bbl with sleeved-on bases for front and rear sights, has typical Newton Arms markings with caliber and “PATENTS PENDING”. Action with interrupted screw thread, multiple locking lugs on bolt, has matted flats on top. Bolt features usual Newton small checkered knob, rotating safety lever, and is fitted with cocking piece sight. Newton’s design also incorporates a unique takedown feature using hinged floorplate with release in front of trigger guard bow as handle to release front action screw and lift bbl and receiver out of stock. The design also incorporates double set triggers. Relatively plain American walnut pistol grip stock has schnabeled forend, steel buttplate, and checkering at grip and forend. Ammunition, includes partial box of Western cartridges, three loaded with Western head stamps, five empty brass with “NACo” head stamps, and a few other misc brass and rounds, one appearing to be an orig NACo dummy. PROVENANCE: Copy of article in GUN DIGEST 1988 ANNUAL, “Newtons First Rifle … Tomorrow’s Designs Yesterday” by Wilf E. Pyle. Ammunition. CONDITION: Good. Metal parts retain 30 – 40% orig blue, perhaps a bit stronger on bbl and action. Stock refinished. Checkering re-cut. Bore is good, polished, with some pitting. Mechanically good.
