NEW ENGLAND CHIPPENDALE BIRCH BALL AND CLAW FOOT HIGHBOY.Last third 18th century, possibly New Hampshire. In two parts, the upper case with cove molding above a central shell-carved drawer flanked by banks of two short drawers over four graduated long drawers all with thumbmolded edges joined to the midmolded lower case fitted with a long drawer over three aligned drawers, the centermost shell-carved above the arcaded apron alternating with pendant finials raised on cabriole legs with shaped returns terminating in well-defined ball and claw feet. SIZE: 75″ h x 35″ w of upper case x 39-1/2″ w overall x 20″ d. CONDITION: Case with nut brown patina and with period brasses. Drawer edges with minor losses to thumbmolding throughout. Upper case lower drawer with repair to proper upper right edge. Front molding on lower case is a different contour from side moldings and appears to be an accommodation for the depth of the upper case which indicates that the piece has been restored. 51313-2 (4,000-6,000) – Lot 2286
