EXCEPTIONAL PAINTED PILGRIM CENTURY ARMCHAIR.

Late 17th early 18th century, Stratford, CT Region. This maple and ash example in original red paint with thin dry varnish overcoat. The chair back with 4 arched slats with carved and beveled cresting, joined to the sausage-and ring-turned rear posts, surmounted by vase, compressed ball, and nipple finials. The raked arms of elephant trunk form with rolled grips, raised on sausage and ring-turned front posts, centering the woven trapezoidal rush seat. The legs joined by turned box stretcher, the front stretcher with exceptional boldly turned double trumpet, reel and arrow turnings. SIZE: 47″ h. 15-3/4″ h of seat. Overall 22-1/2″ w.
