SUPERB PAINTED BANISTER BACK ARMCHAIR.Late 17th early 18th century, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Stepped crown crest above a cupid’s bow lower rail joined by split vase turned lower banisters, joined to vase-turned rear posts with nipple finials. The well carved shaped arms with down-turned “elephant trunk” hand grips continuing to vase and sausage-turned frontal legs terminating in flattened ball feet all joined by a stretcher base. The front stretcher vase and double ring-turned. Chair retains early rush trapezoidal seat with very minor losses. SIZE: 45-1/2″ h of back x 16-1/12″ h of seat x 23-1/2″ w. CONDITION: Surface now with early black paint over original black with age appropriate minor paint wear. Otherwise in very good to excellent untouched condition. 51331-25 (1,500-3,000) – Lot 2269
