IMPORTANT FOLK ART PAINT DECORATED CHILD’S ARMCHAIR.

Early 19th century, New England. Pine, fabric, William Hallowell Blake, Blue Hills, ME area. Original faux wood paint decorated. Inscribed, on old typewritten paper, underside, “This chair was made by William Hallowell Blake about 1835 in the shadow of the Blue Hills where he had moved from the historic Blake home in Dorchester. He was a descendant of Lord Humphrey Blake of England and his first American ancestor, William Blake, came to this country in the ‘John and Mary’ before 1642. His brother, Robert Hallowell Blake, married Miss Gardiner of Gardiner, Maine. The early Blakes who played a large part in the settlement of Dorchester are buried in the Old Granary Burying Ground. This chair was given to Barbara Howorth Gorely on October 23, 1927 by Fanny R. Blake Howorth who was one of the children for whom it was made.” Also attached, underside, label of M. Finkel and Daughter, with inventory number and “Blake Family” inscribed. The chair with raked back, applied rolled crest, adjoining downswept arms with scrolled handholds. The arm supports of swelled vasiform, joining plank seat, with oversized scrolled feet. The back and seat retain early fabric covering horsehair stuffed. SIZE: 18″ x 11″ x 19-1/2″. PROVENANCE: As noted on attached letter, through M. Finkel and Daughter, Philadelphia. CONDITION: Good, fabric worn, age appropriate wear/abrasions, old in-use putty repair rear of left arm and junction to back, proper right rear leg with old reattached break. 9-96597 (500-1,000) – Lot 2265
