EXCEPTIONAL CARVED AND DECORATED CANDLE BOX.Late 18th century, Pennsylvania. The basswood box with dry original blue and red painted surface. This carved example probably a wedding gift carved from a single piece with sliding lid, profusely carved with hearts and “X” symbols within carved borders of triangles. Underside of lid carved “1700”, the underside of box similarly carved under a band of cross-hatched incisions. SIZE: 2-3/4″ h x 7-1/4″ l x 3″ w.
