FINE NINETEENTH CENTURY NAVAL DIRK INSCRIBED TO CONFEDERATE NAVAL OFFICER JOHN T. WOOD ON THE C.S.S. VIRGINIA.This German silver mounted dirk has etched presentation on both sides dated March 9th, 1862. Knife and scabbard measure about 13″ with 7-1/4″ blade with 3-1/2″ false edge. Presentation reading on both sides “PRESENTED TO JOHN T. WOOD” & “FROM HIS SHIPMATES ABOARD C.S.S. VIRGINIA, MARCH 9, 1862”. We cannot guarantee the age of this inscription. PROVENANCE: Robert Berryman collection; Lot #3955 Butterfield’s 3-23 1992; Paul Tudor Jones II Collection. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Blade is overall gray with scattered areas of staining and pitting. Etched presentation is overall discernible. Sharkskin wrapped handle has several small separations and chipping and staining.
