JAMES ERSKINE 12 BORE HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE.

NSN. Cal. 12 ga. for 1-7/8″ paper case and 0.735″ round ball of 592 grains. Mfg 1865-1870 in Scotland. It has fully rifled 28″ dovetailed steel bbls, and is fitted with a four-leaf express rear sight in broad flat. File-cut rib engraved with address “61 Victoria St. Newton-Stewart NB.” Jones underlever action is fitted with bar locks having front sliding safeties and uniquely shaped broad, rounded hammers with tall spurs. Action has arcaded fences and sprung strikers. Action and locks are engraved with 80% very well-cut, medium-shaded scroll. Trigger plate has a scrolled spur forming a pistol grip. Dense European walnut stock with checkering at grip and steel butt plate is nicely marbled. Splinter forend attaches with side nail. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Ray Ordorica. CONDITION: Very Good. Bbls retain nearly all of a re-blue. Action and locks are a smooth dark gray to brown patina. Stock refinished over some light dents. Bores are very fine, nearly excellent, with some scattered light pitting. Action is tight. Locks are crisp. Forend has been tightened by adding tape where it contacts bbls. 51775-2 (4,000-8,000) – Lot 2239
