TWO CARVED AND PAINT-DECORATED MANGLE BOARDS.

Early 19th century, Scandinavia. The first a beech example with stylized horse handle in red wash. The board with three aligned mandalas; two with scrolling intertwined devices, the third with six-pointed flower head, all in red and greenish/black paint. The board engraved “BIB 1828”. The second a birch or poplar example with folk art inspired carved horse handle in brown paint joined to the board engraved with a crown over conjoined C’s above a thistle shrub over the initials “KPD” above the date “1808” above two carved potted plants ending in geometric devices below the horse all within a molded edge, in original green and terracotta red paint. An affixed label on the underside states “This board was from the C. A. Reissmann collection, Denmark”. SIZE: First 25-1/4″ l x 5-1/2″ w. Second 23″ l x 6″ w. CONDITION: First with all original surfaces, evidence of prior insect activity now extinct. Second is very good with untouched surface with normal and expected abrasions to paint along edges otherwise good. 51400-8 (2,200-2,400) – Lot 2214
