CAST IRON PRANCING HORSE WEATHERVANE BY ROCHESTER IRON WORKS, GIMLINTON OR ROCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

Last quarter of the 19th Century. A rare & desirable full-bodied cast iron horse with a sheet iron tail; having a weathered old gold paint over gold leaf surface. This form was sometimes referred to as a “Formal Horse” by the manufacturer because of its sculptural beauty and imposing size. The iron horse was produced in three sizes with some variances; this example is the “middle” size. It has a distinctly detailed mane unique to the horse of this size. It is the rarest & most sculpturally desirable size of the iron horses produced by Rochester Iron Works. Accompanied by a museum stand. NOTE: The Rochester Iron Works Company was known for producing weathervanes in cast iron rather than repousse copper; even though they were considerably heavier, they were well engineered and the weight was counter-balanced well enough for them to rotate and change direction with the wind. Cast iron with sheet iron tail, old repainted gold surface. SIZE: 19″ h x 24″ l. CONDITION: Very good with old repainted gold surface, retaining the original bar at the base with slight bend and roughness. 51319-3 (10,000-25,000) – Lot 2193
