FINE DIMINUTIVE GEORGE III MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE BOOKCASE.

Last quarter 18th century, England. In two parts, the upper case with molded cornice fitted with a pair of astragal glazed doors, each with eight glass panels. The pilasters in the form of engaged stylized fluted Ionic half columns. The interior fitted with three adjustable shelves, The bookcase set back on the lower case fitted with a brushing slide over a pair of aligned short drawers over a four graduated long drawers all with cockbeaded edges. The uppermost long drawer opening to an interior fitted with a baise-lined writing surface sliding open to reveal a storage well. The drawer additionally fitted with a well containing a pair of faceted glass inkwells and a double trough pen tray. The whole on a molded plinth raised on bracket feet with shaped returns. The lower case fitted with heavy brass carrying handles. The drawers with large pierced brasses of the period. SIZE: 77-1/2″ h x 32-1/2″ w of case x 34″ w overall x 15-1/2″ d. CONDITION: The secretary with original surface. Period brasses are replacements. Bracket base appears original as do backboards. Cabinet with rich dark patina.
