PAINT DECORATED BLANKET BOX.

Circa 1815-1820, South Shaftsbury, Vermont. Signed in chalk on the lid interior in period cursive script ‘Stephen N P’ (?) The whimsically painted box in three-color decoration of blue, yellow and red-ochre. The decoration of the front centered by a large blue sponge-painted oval with feathered border, on a yellow and red-ochre horizontally grain-painted ground, contained within a bold border decorated to simulate crossbanding at the edges. The front edge of the dovetailed lid moulding sponge-painted in blue; the top having a similar paint treatment to the front. The sides painted with diagonal feathered elliptical designs in yellow and red-ochre, on a vertically grain-painted ground with crossbanded edges. Standing on tall Chippendale profile feet with fanciful graining to simulate exotic woods. A dramatic and unusual example within the South Shaftsbury / Matteson Vermont school vernacular.
