CHIPPENDALE FIGURED MAHOGANY SECRETARY BOOKCASE.

Massachusetts, circa 1775 – 1790. A particularly bold blocked end serpentine example with robust claw and ball feet and center drop. Four graduated drawers within the cock beaded case and slant front writing board revealing a fully fitted double stepped block and shell carved interior, with valanced letter slots above the drawers and half spindles applied to document drawers. The bookcase uppercase with dental molded pitched pediment with ball and spire center finial, and center candle slide. The doors with fluted pilasters and serpentine molded door frames revealing a fitted interior of drawers, shelves, and valanced compartments. The selection of figured mahogany throughout is particularly pleasing. SIZE: 96″ h to top of center finial. Lower case 42″ w x 22-5/8″ d. PROVENANCE: From a Maine/Texas estate being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Good with age cracks to pediment and lower case sides. Brasses appear to be period replacements. Retains very pleasing color and old mellow refinished surface.
