UNSIGNED (Chinese School, 1775-1900) HONG KONG HARBOR, CIRCA 1865.

Outstanding oil on canvas panoramic view of Hong Kong Harbor with many ships from different nations, all in a tranquil harbor with the city of Hong Kong as a backdrop with large mountains. All under a blue sky, pink horizon & white clouds. This example uniquely shows several ships with sails up, including an American clipper in the heart of the port. Three British ensigns are visible to the right with another American at anchor, while a variety of other European flags are visible to the left and on the headland buildings. The signal tower is in place atop Victoria Peak, and the larger estates rise on the peak’s lower foothill elevations. Housed in an appropriate Chinese style modern frame branded “Richard Tobey Los Angeles”, having title plaque. Retaining a Vallejo Gallery label on verso. One of the finer examples that we have had the pleasure of offering. SIZE: 17-1/2″ x 30″. Overall: 24-3/4″ x 37″. PROVENANCE: From a Maine/Texas estate being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Very good with fine craquelure, lined, inpainting to craquelure areas. 51398-20 (20,000-40,000) – Lot 2110
