DAUM COMMEMORATIVE GLASSWARE.

Lot consists of a small bowl, cup and saucer, and two salt dips. The cup, saucer and bowl are decorated with a cameo and enameled spread eagle with crown as well as a Coat of Arms, and a cameo and enameled thistle. All set against an acid cut background of geometric design and swirls, as well as groupings of circles containing the Cross of Lorraine. The salt dips have matching acid cut decoration as well as panels of the cameo and enameled thistle and Cross of Lorraine. The drawing for the original Auguste Daum design, dated 1893, is preserved at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The glass was produced to commemorate a Russian naval delegation’s visit to France in 1893, to sign a Franco-Russian alliance treaty. The French Government commissioned artisans of Alsace and Lorraine to produce items to be given as gifts to the delegation. Bowl is signed on underside with engraved signature “Daum Nancy” with the Cross of Lorraine, while one salt is signed in gold on the underside “Daum Nancy” with the Cross of Lorraine.
